Indigenous Perspectives in Dramatic Play

Over Term 4 2020, the Baiyangbaiyaang Room children have been exploring looking after babies in our dramatic play space.

Educators intentionally added an Aboriginal perspective by providing a felt coolamon and a possum skin for the children to explore, alongside more familiar baby-care items such as dummies, bottles, blankets and cots. Over the term the children have explored the many uses of a coolamon – they have used it as a bed, a baby carrier and a bag for their babies items. The children have also used the possum skin as a blanket and bed. Educators have engaged in conversation with children about how these items have been used in Aboriginal history and how they are used today. Through this experience the children have expanded their understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
