On Thursday 24 June 2021 Windale Public School had their NAIDOC Day celebrations. Parents, carers, families and community members were invited to come along and join in with the celebrations.
We started off with an Opening Ceremony. Aunty Laurel Williams and our Nubalin preschool students performed the Acknowledgement of Country alongside each other. Our wonderful Windale Deadly Dancers performed for our community, as well as Belmont High School Dance Group too. We had guest speakers who spoke about the importance of NAIDOC Day for them, which the students were really engaged in.
After our Opening Ceremony we sat with our families for a sausage sizzle for lunch. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and just having the opportunity to sit and yarn with each other. So many smiles and lots of happy people.
After lunch was done, we got organised into our eight groups. There were eight cultural activities set out around our school environment consisting of Dance, Ochre, Language, Clay making, Headbands and Bracelets, Weaving, Bush Tucker & Traditional Games. The students enjoyed rotating around these activities and learning about Aboriginal knowledge and cultures of the land in which they live and learn everyday.
It was such a successful day, with many community members still talking about it for weeks after.
