Kindergarten in our Yarning Circle

In August 2021, Kindergarten went out to our Yarning Circle learning space. We sat and listened to the story Shake A Leg, read by Aunty Boo. Whilst the students were listening to the story they were also busy creating their own stories beneath their little feet in the fine sand.

Our next conversation was about ochre and why it was used by Aboriginal people. Students got the chance to have a hands-on experience and grind up their own ochre rocks and then turn this into the paint they needed to dance like in the book Shake A Leg.

We also spoke about the importance of sandpaper fig and why this was used by Aboriginal people. Some students were given a sandpaper fig leave whilst others were given a piece of sandpaper.

They were also given a clap stick that needed to be sanded so they could see which one worked best.

The students were amazed at how similar the two materials were and were super excited to go home and share the knowledge
